Just like the saying goes in Animal Farm goes: “All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others”, the same applies for food. While all food is important, some foods are more essential for your immunity & general well-being. Today, we delve into the foods that you should never ignore and how they are essential to your body.

Ginger

Ginger reduces inflammation and relieves a sore throat. It is a great deterrent for nausea. It also has cholesterol-lowering properties.

Citrus fruits

Ever wondered why people often turn to Vitamin C when they catch a cold? This is because it helps build up your immune system – increases production of white blood cells which fight infections. Unfortunately, the body doesn’t produce or preserve Vitamin C which means you need to replenish daily. On average, an adult female should have at least 75mg of Vitamin C daily while an adult male should have at least 90 mg of Vitamin C.

Yogurt

Yogurt stimulates your immune system to help fight diseases. It is also a great source of vitamin D which helps regulate the immune system and boosts the body’s natural defenses against diseases. However, it is important that you opt for plain yogurts as opposed to the flavored, sugary ones.

Green tea

Green tea has high levels of epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), a very powerful antioxidant which greatly enhances the immune function. It also contains amino acid L-theanine which aids the production of germ-fighting compounds in the T cells.

Poultry

Chicken soup tends to work wonders when you are sick simply because it effectively lowers inflammation. Chicken & turkey is high in Vitamin B-6 which is vital to the formation of new and healthy red blood cells. All in all, poultry contains nutrients that are great for gut healing & overall immunity.

Garlic

Garlic’s great immune-boosting properties result from its sulfur content. Since time immemorial, garlic has been known for fighting infections. Garlic slows down the hardening of arteries. It also helps lower blood pressure.

Papaya

Loaded with Vitamin C, Papayas also also have a digestive enzyme called papain that has anti-inflammatory effects and are high in potassium, magnesium, and folate, all of which are beneficial to one’s overall health.

Turmeric

Known for its anti-inflammatory properties, turmeric has a high concentration of curcumin which has immune boosting & antiviral properties. It is also great at decreasing exercise-induced muscle damage.
