You have tried it all but it doesn’t seem to be working. Or if there’s change, it’s either unsatisfactory or short-lived and yet you seem to be ticking the right boxes: regulating your diet, avoiding junk food & sweet beverages etc. Here are some of the reasons why your weight loss efforts are not paying off.
You are not eating enough protein
Getting enough protein is important if you’re trying to lose weight. In fact, protein has been shown to help with weight loss in several ways;
· Reducing appetite
· Increasing feelings of fullness
· Lowering the amount of weight regained
· Maintaining or increasing metabolic rate
· Protecting muscle mass during weight loss
To help with weight loss, try to make sure each of your meals contains a high protein food. Keep in mind your choice of protein isn’t limited to meat or dairy. Beans & legumes are also great and affordable options.
You expect too much, too quick!
Having unrealistic expectations is common and may work against you. Failing to meet weight loss goals leads to future challenges losing weight. Pace yourself realistically for example a 5% or 10% drop in weight at a rate of 1 or 2 pounds per week. This may improve your ability to meet your goal while losing weight at a healthy speed.
You are not sleeping enough!
When you snooze, you lose weight. Sleep helps your body to recover from strenuous workouts, allowing for cell regeneration and muscle building. It also keeps your metabolism humming, keeps your hunger hormones in check and keeps your stress levels low. When you don’t sleep enough (7 – 8 hours a night), your cortisol levels skyrocket, which can slow down your metabolism and lead to excess production of belly fat.
You are over-starving yourself!
It might seem a good option to deprive yourself of food in order to cut down calories. Starving can slow down your metabolism process and can become an obstacle if you want to lose weight. It also leads to binge eating and heightens cravings. Therefore, you should focus on healthy and nourishing foods, while also keeping in mind the portion size.
You assume diet drinks & sugar-free alternatives are automatically good replacements!
Diet drinks are not helpful for weight loss and they may even cause people to pile on the pounds because they can dull your sweet receptors, causing you to consume more of traditionally sweet foods, and thus, consume more calories. When you see words like “organic” or “gluten-free”, you may misjudge how many calories are actually in there. As a result, you tend to feel entitled to indulge, which can lead to eating way more calories than you otherwise would.
You are eating too much fat on a low carb diet!
Ketogenic and low carb diets can be very effective for weight loss for some individuals. The downside is that many low carb and Ketogenic diets also allow unlimited amounts of fat, assuming that the resulting appetite suppression will keep calories low enough for weight loss. As a result, you end up consuming too many calories for a calorie deficit.
You are falling for supplements & weight loss creams!
You should not fall into the trap of believing that supplements or certain medicines help you lose weight. Many are fake while others may give you short-term effects and may also lead to poor health outcomes. Instead, the best way out to lose weight is eat well-balanced nourishing meals. As for weight loss creams, don’t count on these at all.
You are not drinking enough water
Not drinking enough water can have a negative impact on the metabolism as well as your appetite. We often respond to thirst inappropriately by eating instead of drinking since the same part of our brain controls both responses. When you’re hydrated, it also helps to make your stomach feel full, which can fend off the feeling of hunger.
