Alopecia Treatment

Alopecia Areata is an autoimmune disorder that leads to unpredictable hair loss and it can affect anyone regardless of age and gender but it is most common before the age of 30. It does not directly make people sick, nor is it contagious.

For most sufferers, the hair loss is often only a few patches but for a few, the hair loss can be extreme. Where there is complete loss of hair on the scalp, it is called Alopecia Totalis and where there’s hair loss from the entire body, it’s called Alopecia Universalis.

Diagnosis

The symptoms of Alopecia are so distinctive which often makes diagnosis quick & straightforward. We look at the degree of hair loss and carefully examine hairs from affected areas.

We can also perform a skin biopsy if required and to rule out other autoimmune diseases, we might perform a blood test.

Treatment

Alopecia Areata can’t be cured but it can be treated and hair can grow back. Here are some treatment options;

• Diphenylcyclopropenone: A topical drug that has been successful in treating Alopecia in some people.
• Squaric acid Dibutylester: This is also used to treat Alopecia Areata.
• Steroids: These help calm down the immune response and inflammation.
• Cyclosporine: An immunosuppressive drug, in combination with a steroid called methylprednisolone.
• Vampire Hair Restoration®: This entails injecting PRP into the scalp to promote hair growth and prevent hair loss. The PRP injections are effective in treating androgenic Alopecia.
