Botox® is a purified form of botulinum toxin that is obtained from bacteria. A regulated amount of Botox® is given to correct wrinkles and has been used safely for decades.
How it works
Botox® also known as Anti-Wrinkle injections works by blocking nerve signals in the muscles where it is injected. When those nerve signals are interrupted, the affected muscle is temporarily paralyzed or frozen. Without movement of these selected muscles in the face, certain wrinkles may be softened, reduced or even removed.
What it targets
Botox® (Anti-Wrinkle injections) only works on wrinkles that are caused by muscle movement. These are known as dynamic wrinkles, and are often called “expression lines.” These lines are caused by smiling, frowning, squinting, and other facial expressions.
Unlike Dermal fillers®, Botox® does not work on static fine lines and wrinkles caused by sagging or loss of plumpness in the face. Static wrinkles include lines on the cheeks, neck, and jowl areas.
Is Botox® permanent?
Botox® (Anti-Wrinkle injections) is not a permanent treatment. Repeated treatments are necessary for continued wrinkle-reducing effects.
What it treats
It’s mainly effective for dynamic wrinkles caused by smiling, frowning, squinting, and other facial expressions;
- The “11” between the brows
- Horizontal lines on the forehead
- Crow’s feet around the eyes etc
Advantages of Botox®
1. Enhances beauty
Botox® (Anti-Wrinkle injections) can improve anything from severe forehead lines to frown lines and all parts in between. This makes it an easy way to improve your appearance and make a better first impression.
2. Non-Invasive and Fast Procedure
Botox® injections are an excellent option for cosmetic procedures because they are non-invasive and fast. The entire procedure only takes a few minutes to perform. Plus because it is a non-surgical procedure, it means that you will have less downtime with your appointment and you can get in and out quickly.
3. Lasting Results
Something else that makes Botox® a great cosmetic treatment option is that it provides long-lasting results.
4. Inexpensive Cosmetic Procedure
Botox® (Anti-Wrinkle injections) is also an inexpensive cosmetic procedure, especially when compared to surgical procedures or luxury skin care products. Hence, you can also save your money on other skin care procedures and different types of facial surgery or wrinkle treatments.
5. Nearly Immediate Results
It provides nearly immediate results. Once you get your Botox® (Anti-Wrinkle injections) you will see results as early as three to four days after your procedure.
Other benefits of Botox®
1. Treats muscle pain
For people that suffer from different types of muscle pain, it helps relax these muscles.
2. Treats chronic migraines
Botox® is injected around pain fibers that are involved in headaches. Botox enters the nerve endings around where it is injected and blocks the release of chemicals involved in pain transmission. This prevents activation of pain networks in the brain.
Patients see increasing benefit with an increase in the number of treatment cycles. One Botox® treatment lasts for 10-12 weeks, and patients reported that two Botox treatments reduced the number of headache days by approximately 50%.
3. Botox® treats severe underarm sweating
Sweating is normal. In fact, it’s essential: Humans need to sweat in order to regulate body temperature. But some people sweat much more than is needed. Hyperhidrosis, more commonly known as excessive sweating, can significantly affect a person’s quality of life. In some cases, problematic sweating is limited to one area of the body, such as the underarms or feet, a condition called focal hyperhidrosis. Other cases are more generalized, with sweating over large areas of the body. The most common areas affected by hyperhidrosis are the scalp, underarms, hands, feet and groin area.
Botox® is a particularly effective treatment for focal hyperhidrosis. Botox® injections use botulinum toxin to block the nerve signals responsible for sweating, stopping the sweat glands from producing too much sweat. Retreatment is typically needed in four to six months, as the nerves regenerate. Over time, however, patients can go longer between treatments.
4. Botox® treats urinary incontinence or even an overactive bladder
Botox® is a highly effective treatment for an overactive bladder. It works for 75% of women who have the treatment and is one of the few treatments that help with night time symptoms.
An overactive bladder is caused by over-activity of the bladder wall muscle. This causes urinary frequency (needing to pee more often) and urinary urgency (needing to pee urgently). It is often associated with urinary leakage (incontinence).
Botox® works by stopping the bladder wall muscle contracting (squeezing) too much. This reduces urinary frequency and urgency and reduces urinary incontinence. Most women notice improvements three to four days after having Botox® treatment, but for some women, this may take up to three weeks. Botox® treatment is not a permanent solution and the effects will gradually wear off.
5. Botox® treats Bruxism (Involuntary Teeth Grinding)
Once Botox® is injected into the masseter muscles, it works by temporarily relaxing the muscles, reducing nerve signals from reaching the muscles that play a pivotal role in clenching and grinding. Botox® will help to alleviate and prevent involuntary movements of bruxism.
Botox® is also used in this area for masseter reductions. All that clenching and grinding of teeth can make our masseter muscles get bigger which can make our faces look wider. Many patients want to reduce their masseters, and Botox can also work to slim the face by relaxing these jaw muscles. There is even the added benefit of possibly having pronounced cheekbones from this treatment.
Other benefits of getting a Botox® (Anti-Wrinkle injection) in the masseter muscle
- Relieves jaw tension
- Balances the face
- Slims the appearance of a wide jaw
- Eliminates headaches that originate from the jaw area
