Understanding loose skin
Loose or sagging skin occurs when internal or external factors affect the key molecules that help keep the skin elastic, firm & hydrated. Firm skin stretches and snaps back into place easily but when the skin loses this ability, it starts to sag.
Most common saggy skin areas include: Stomach, Face, Neck, Buttocks, Arms, Legs.
Causes of Loose Skin
Weight Loss
Excess weight for an extended period of time damages your skin’s collagen and elastin which makes it harder for skin to snap back when you lose weight so the more weight you lose & the more rapid the weight loss is, the more likelihood of developing saggy skin.
Aging
As skin ages, it loses two important proteins manufactured in the dermis — elastin & collagen. Elastin gives skin elasticity. It provides firm skin with the ability to bounce back when stretched while Collagen is composed of compact fibers that helps to keep the skin maintain its structure & firmness. These 2 proteins decline with age.
Pregnancy
Pregnancy will most likely leave you with some loose skin. The probability steepens when you carry multiples (twins, triplets etc). The sagging skin often occurs around the abdomen. Maternal age may also play a role. The older mothers tend to get more sagging skin.
Sun Exposure
This can affect your elasticity and collagen production, too, but at a faster rate than aging. Sun damage caused by UVA/UVB radiation can affect your skin’s DNA and mutate it, leading to premature cellular death. This breaks down the collagen and elastin in your skin.
Smoking
Like sun exposure, smoking can lead to premature aging. The nicotine in cigarettes can narrow the blood vessels in the outermost layers of your skin. Due to this, the blood flow in your skin is disrupted which can lead to less oxygen and nutrients to your skin cells. Without the natural nutrients, your skin cells die (similar to sun exposure), reducing the production of collagen and elastin in your body.
Loose Skin Remedies
Exercise
Any movement that builds muscle mass or tightens muscles can reduce the look of minor skin sagging.
· Weight lifting or resistance training with weights, machines, or resistance bands
· Pilates: Pilates uses controlled movements to tighten and strengthen the body’s core, glutes, legs and arms.
· Facial exercise: Facial exercises can reduce saggy skin around the chin, jowls and throat.
· Yoga: Many advocates of yoga believe that certain exercises are beneficial for reducing saggy facial skin.
Massage
Massage may improve blood flow and stimulate fibroblasts. Fibroblasts are cells that help produce connective tissues such as collagen and elastin that keep the skin firm.
Firming products
Upon consultation, different firming gels, creams, patches and other products can be prescribed by our Lead Specialist for the topical treatment of minor cases of loose skin.
Nutritional Supplements
Diet plays a significant role in skin health. Our Lead Specialist can also prescribe a number of supplements that may have benefits for loose skin, including anti-aging and anti-sagging effects.
Non-Invasive Treatments
· LED Light Therapy
LED light therapy stimulates the body’s production of Adenosine Triphosphate, while also igniting your body’s synthesis of collagen and elastin—both elements are crucial for your skin’s tightness & firmness.
· Chemical Peel
The removal of the outer layer of old skin can decrease the appearance of loose, sagging, or wrinkled skin on the face and neck. Once the old skin peels off, the skin underneath is usually less wrinkled and smoother.
· Skin Tightening
This is a non-surgical procedure that works by using targeted energy to deeper layers of skin, which stimulates collagen and elastin production and gradually improves skin tone and texture. It’s best suited for patients who are bothered by mild to moderate skin laxity.
· Body Sculpting
We use high intensity pulsed electromagnetic technology to build muscle and tone the body thereby accelerating skin tightening.
