How Long Does a Nose Job Last? Surgical vs Non-Surgical

Direct answer: It depends on which nose job you mean. Surgical rhinoplasty reshapes the bone and cartilage, so the change is long-lasting, although your nose keeps ageing with the rest of your face and the final shape can take up to a year to settle. A non-surgical "liquid rhinoplasty" with filler lasts 6–18 months and then needs repeating.

Surgical Rhinoplasty:

Long-lasting; the final shape can take up to a year to show.

Liquid Rhinoplasty (Filler):

6–18 months, varying from person to person.

Downtime:

Surgery: ~2 weeks before social plans; Filler: avoid heavy exercise for 24 hours.

If you are unhappy with a bump on your nose, a drooping tip or a shape that does not seem to match the rest of your face, the first question is often not "how much?" but "how long will it last?" Nobody wants to pay for a change that disappears within months, or commit to one that cannot easily be undone.

The phrase "nose job" covers two very different treatments: an operation performed by a plastic surgeon, and filler injections given in a clinic room by a medical injector. They last for very different lengths of time, suit different noses and carry different risks.

At Refine, both are available: surgical rhinoplasty with our plastic surgeon, Dr William Lubega, and non-surgical liquid rhinoplasty with Dr Chirag Kotecha, Aesthetic Physician. Here is how long each one lasts, and how to choose between them.

Two Different "Nose Jobs"

Surgical Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty is an operation to reshape the nose by changing its bone and cartilage, the firm but flexible tissue that shapes the lower nose. A surgeon can reduce a hump, refine the tip, straighten a crooked nose or change the overall size. Sometimes the wall between the nostrils, called the septum, is straightened at the same time to help breathing. At Refine, rhinoplasty is performed by Dr Lubega.

Non-Surgical Liquid Rhinoplasty

Liquid rhinoplasty uses dermal filler, a smooth gel injected under the skin, to camouflage a bump, lift a slightly low tip or improve symmetry. It changes the nose's shape and profile without the downtime of surgery. Filler adds volume, so it can make a nose look straighter or more balanced, but it cannot make a nose smaller.

How Long Surgical Rhinoplasty Lasts

Because surgery changes the structure of the nose itself, the new shape is long-lasting, and most people never need another operation. A minority choose a second, "revision" operation to fine-tune the result or correct a problem, which is one reason the choice of surgeon matters.

The Swelling Timeline

  • First week: A splint is often worn, and swelling and bruising around the eyes are common.
  • Weeks 2–3: Most visible bruising fades, and many people return to work and social plans.
  • First few months: Most of the swelling settles and the new shape becomes clear.
  • Up to a year: The last swelling, especially at the tip, goes down and the final shape shows. Thicker nasal skin, which is common in people of African descent, tends to hold swelling for longer.

Your Nose Still Ages

Rhinoplasty does not stop time. With age, the skin thins, the tissues supporting the tip weaken and the tip may drop slightly. These changes happen whether or not you have had surgery, and they are gradual.

How Long Liquid Rhinoplasty Lasts

Liquid rhinoplasty is temporary. The effects last between 6 and 18 months, varying from person to person.

At Refine we use hyaluronic acid filler, a gel similar to a substance found naturally in the skin, which the body gradually breaks down. How quickly depends on the product used, the amount injected and your own body. There is no fixed touch-up schedule; your doctor will advise at review whether and when a top-up makes sense.

Hyaluronic acid filler can usually be dissolved with an enzyme called hyaluronidase, which we keep on hand, so it is adjustable in a way surgery is not.

One firm rule: We do not use filler or any other non-surgical correction on a nose that has already had surgical rhinoplasty. Surgery changes the anatomy, including the blood supply, and the risk is too high. If you are unhappy with a surgical result, we will refer you for a surgical revision instead.

Nose Filler Safety: Why the Injector Matters

Liquid rhinoplasty is quick, but the nose is one of the higher-risk areas for filler. Its blood vessels connect with vessels that supply the skin of the face and the eye. If filler enters or presses on one of these vessels, it can block blood flow, which can damage the skin and, rarely, cause permanent loss of sight.

That is why nose filler should only be done by an experienced medical injector who:

  • Knows the anatomy of the nose in detail and injects slowly and cautiously
  • Uses a hyaluronic acid filler that can be dissolved
  • Keeps hyaluronidase and an emergency plan ready in the clinic
  • Works in a medical setting, never at a salon, spa or home "filler party"

After any nose filler, call the clinic immediately if you notice severe or worsening pain, skin that turns pale, grey, blue or blotchy, or any change in your vision. During clinic hours, call the clinic; out of hours, call your doctor on the personal number they give you at the time of your treatment. If your vision changes, also go straight to the nearest emergency department.

Surgery carries its own risks, including bleeding, infection, changes in breathing, the risks of anaesthesia and a result you are unhappy with. A good surgeon will discuss these openly before you decide.

Surgical vs Non-Surgical: Side by Side

Feature Surgical Rhinoplasty Liquid Rhinoplasty (Filler)
What it does Reshapes bone and cartilage Adds filler to smooth, lift or balance
Can it make the nose smaller? Yes No
How long it lasts Long-lasting; the nose still ages naturally 6–18 months
Downtime Usually about 2 weeks before most social plans; final shape up to a year Avoid heavy physical activity for 24 hours
Comfort Done under anaesthesia, usually general Minimal discomfort, with a numbing agent
Can it be reversed? No; changes need further surgery Hyaluronic acid filler can usually be dissolved

Which Might Suit You?

  • Filler may suit you if you have never had nose surgery and have a small bump, a slightly low tip or mild asymmetry, want to preview a change, or cannot take time off.
  • Surgery may suit you if you want a smaller or narrower nose, have a large hump or wide nostrils, have breathing problems, or want a long-lasting change.

When to See a Specialist at Refine

For surgical rhinoplasty, the specialist is Dr William Lubega, Plastic Surgeon, who carries out a thorough evaluation before any surgery. For liquid rhinoplasty, it is Dr Chirag Kotecha, Aesthetic Physician.

Either consultation should cover what bothers you about your nose, your medical history (including pregnancy or breastfeeding, when treatment is usually postponed), any breathing problems or previous injury or surgery, and an examination of your nose, skin thickness and facial proportions. You should leave understanding what is realistic, what the risks are, and whether filler or surgery fits your goals. It is fine to take time to decide.

Refine Skin & Body Clinic has three branches in Kampala: Lugogo (Forest Mall), Kabalagala (Palm Village Mall) and Bukoto (UMC Victoria Hospital Annex). In South Sudan, Refine Skin & Body Centre is on Airport Road in Juba. Learn more about plastic surgery at Refine, non-surgical liquid rhinoplasty and Dr William Lubega, or book a consultation.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

1. Does a surgical nose job last for life?

Direct answer: The structural change is long-lasting, and most people never need more surgery. However, your nose continues to age with the rest of your face, so it will change gradually over the years. A minority of people have a revision operation to refine the result.

2. How long does liquid rhinoplasty last?

Direct answer: The effects last between 6 and 18 months, varying from person to person. Your doctor will advise at review whether a top-up is worthwhile.

3. When will I see the final result of a rhinoplasty?

Direct answer: Most swelling settles in the first few months, but the final shape, particularly at the tip, can take up to a year. Thicker nasal skin tends to take longer.

4. Can filler make my nose smaller?

Direct answer: No. Filler adds volume, so it can hide a bump, lift a tip or improve symmetry, which can make a nose look more balanced. Making a nose smaller or narrower needs surgery.

5. Is non-surgical rhinoplasty safe?

Direct answer: In experienced medical hands, most people have only mild swelling or bruising. However, the nose carries a small risk of filler blocking a blood vessel, which can damage the skin or, rarely, sight. Choose a medical injector who uses dissolvable hyaluronic acid filler and is ready to act in an emergency.

6. Can I have filler after a surgical rhinoplasty?

Direct answer: Not at Refine. Once a nose has had surgery, its anatomy and blood supply have changed, so we do not offer filler or any other non-surgical correction. If something needs correcting, we refer you for a surgical revision.

7. Does a nose job hurt?

Direct answer: Liquid rhinoplasty causes minimal discomfort because we use a numbing agent. Surgery is done under anaesthesia, and afterwards most people feel stuffiness and aching rather than sharp pain, which is managed with pain relief.

8. Can a nose job keep my natural features?

Direct answer: It should. A good result suits your face rather than replacing your identity, and Dr Lubega aims for results that complement your natural features. Tell your surgeon what you want to keep as well as what you want to change.

The Bottom Line

How long a nose job lasts depends on the type. Surgical rhinoplasty gives a long-lasting structural change, with the final shape settling over about a year and the nose ageing naturally after that. Liquid rhinoplasty lasts 6–18 months, needs repeating to maintain, and suits smaller changes on a nose that has not had surgery, but only in the hands of an experienced medical injector.

If you are unsure which is right for you, book a consultation at Refine and talk it through before you decide.
